Crewe and Nantwich Senior Colts Home to Fylde
Sunday 16th November 2008
This weekend Crewe and Nantwich Senior Colts hosted a return fixture with Fylde. Having been on the wrong end of a 59 point defeat when they last faced Fylde, Crewe and Nantwich had some points to prove.
The game started with Crewe and Nantwich in a positive frame of mind and early pressure was rewarded with a converted penalty by Reece Burley, returning after a long absence. Good pressure from C&N followed the restart however it was Fylde that capitalised on a half chance which saw them run the length of the pitch for an unconverted try.
Straight from the restart Fylde again capitalised on the smallest of opportunities with their organised back line working a further try. At this point the game could have gone either way.
C&N mounted strong pressure from their dominant forwards with some excellent running from the Number 8, Heming. A C&N lineout on the Fylde 22 followed by a strong forward drive resulted in Vernon crossing the line. A difficult conversion was missed.
C&N remained influential in the forwards and following great play recycled a Fylde lineout and the forwards drove over for a second try from Vernon.
The score at half time was 13 – 12 to Crewe and Nantwich and the second half started badly with the Fylde backs using their strength and pace to claim the first try of the second half. The conversion gave them a 6 point lead which they seemed determined to defend at all costs.
Wave after wave of pressure from C&N went unrewarded but excellent play from scrum half Johnson kept driving the pack forward. A series of penalties on the Fylde line was justly rewarded when the referee awarded a penalty try. Burley converted to restore C&N's slender one point lead with ten minutes remaining. With both teams having opportunities to win the match, excellent defence from the Crewe and Nantwich backs maintained the lead.
The closing seconds of the game saw Fylde held at by some superb defence and they were awarded a five metre scrum. In the last play of the game the C&N forwards made the last big effort and a superb strike from the Hooker, Thomas, returned the ball for Johnson to kick the ball dead.
An excellent effort from everyone involved was celebrated at the final whistle. As a team Crewe and Nantwich played a disciplined and controlled game with some glimpses of their improving backs. An exciting game played in fantastic spirit and commitment from every player on the pitch is a credit to the club. To turn a 59 point defeat into a slender win is a fantastic achievement and again proved that, on their day, the Crewe and Nantwich Senor Colts are a match for anyone.
Final score Crewe and Nantwich 20 – Fylde 19.
