Whitchurch Festival 19th April

Another festival, another lovely day. Not sure if we can hope for 3 out of 3 when we get to Telford!

Whitchurch had a great setup for the day, and the event was organised on a points basis, so no finals etc to plan for, just get the points in. The lads played 6 great games, a few sleepy moments let a few points go that could have been defended/scored, but that is how it can be sometimes. The definition of where to put the ball down for a try however is not something to mistake, which was what we suffered in one game. 2 foot off the line!, possible lost us the 2nd position, grumble, grumble!

Games -

1st Game drew with Oswestry 3 - 3 but only played 4 minutes!! Scorers - Ollie, Rhys, Ruari
2nd Game beat Whitchurch A 6 - 0 scorers - Sam 2, Rhys 2, Ollie, Ruari
3rd Game lost to Sandbach 6 - 3 scorers - Max 2, Sam (4-0 down)
4th Game beat Shrewsbury 6 - 2 scorers - Ollie 3, Rhys 2, Ruari
5th Game beat Whitchurch B 4 - 1 scorers - Eddie, Sam, Max, Ruari
6th Game drew with Lymm 5 - 5 scorers - Max 2, Ollie 2, Rhys

Thank you to all players and parents for the effort on the day.

U8 Cheshire Cup 29th March 2009

photo

The U8s Cheshire Cup was based at Wirral RUFC, and we arrived to a clear sunny day, although a slightly cold day, better than what it could have been!
Wirral had setup a great event, the old MASH army tent as the control point was great, as was the ice cream van on permanent standby!

We started the day in group 3 on pitch 3

Won 1st game v Anselmians 5-3 - scorers - Rhys 2, Eddie 1, Sam, 1 Olli 1 Won 2nd game v Northwich 7-3 - scorers - Eddie 3, Toby 1, Raury 1, Sam 1, Rhys 1 Won 3rd game v Winnington Park - 8-2 - scorers - Sam 3, Eddie 2, Chris 1, Rhys 1, Olli 1

We topped the group with 3 wins from 3, tries scored 20, tries against 8, points 9

This great start put us through to play for the Cup. In the Quarter final v Wirral following a 9-9 draw we won based on number of tries scored in tournament so far Wirral 15, C&N 29. Also probably the best match of the day.
Scorers - Raury 2, Sam 2, Chris 2, Toby 2, Rhys 1

Next onto the Semi-Final v Altrincham Kersal where a 5-5 draw again gave us the win based on the number of tries scored in tournament so far AK 20, C&N 34.
Scorers - Eddie 2, Rhys 2, Olli 1

Finally the big Final v Lymm. Remember the Cup is the main event, so arguable the 2 best teams in Cheshire sould end up here. Unfortunately we lost 9-4.
Scorers - Eddie 1, Sam 1, Toby 1, Chris 1

Total tries scored in tournament  38 top by 5.

Top try scorers - Eddie 9, Sam 8, Rhys 7, Toby 4, Chris 4, Raury 3, Olli 3

Well done to the whole squad who contributed to a superb day and great effort -

Sam, Olli, Raury, Toby, Laurence, Callum, Thomas, Eddie, Chris and Rhys.

Also thanks to parents for their support and to coaches Nick and Colin for all the work they put in.

The player of the week Cup was awarded to the whole team because of their great efforts of the day on the pitch, and their good behaviour off.

U8 V Whitchurch U8 25th January 2009

Unbelievable! 2 weekends of rugby matches in a row! Off we went to Whitchurch nice and close, thanks to a great turnout we managed 2 full teams and we got 3 games in.
A reasonable day for weather as well, and it made a pleasant change to have dry warmish feet.!

The boys came with great attitude and put on some amazing Rugby. We generally used good use of all the pitch, and as Coach Nick pointed out a number of our tries came from breakdowns where we caused Whitchurch to fumble under pressure. Roll on the tournaments!

Whitchurch game 1 - Won 9-2 scorers - Eddie 4, Sam 3, Rhys 2
Whitchurch game 2 - Lost 7-8 scorers - Chris 2, Max 2, Ben 1, Rory 1, Toby 1

Whitchurch game 3 - Won 7-3 scorers - Sam 2, Oliver 1, Eddie 1, Max, 1, Rhys 1, Rory 1

C&N U8's V Macclesfield (Marple)

At last we managed to play some Rugby! We travelled to Macclesfield on a lovely sunny morning, and eventually found where we were playing - Muddy field No.1! ultimately the best thing was we were playing Rugby in a surprise  3 way. the lads did very well against traditional a very strong side that macc normally produce. With more Rugby we may have earnt another point or 2.
Thank you to the boys who played for Marple the coaches were proud of you.

V Mac 'A' lost 6-5 scorers were - Eddie 2, Rhys 2, Sam 1 V Mac 'B' Won  10-6 scorers were - Eddie 4, Rory 2, Rhys 2, Thomas 1, Callum 1 V Marple - Lost 6-5 scorers for Crewe were - Rory 2, Ben 1, Callum 1, Thomas 1 - (Sam and Thomas also scored for Marple so a moral victory
really)

C&N V Stoke

Sunday 16th November

A nice day for rugby (wet ground, cool) at the Vagrants
In general some good rugby was played, but we let ourselves down letting Stoke draw our defence across the pitch then sneaking back round (Eddie Cooper style!) We must work on resetting the defence, and bunching up.
Some difficult decisions didn’t go our way which could have meant a couple of points here and there, but the teams were quite reasonable matched.
We attacked well, and I was impressed with more and more players running upto tackled players and getting ball on the move. Keep it up! Also some good side stepping from many!

Game 1
Won 8 - 7 (Scorers – Eddie 4, Rhys 1, Alex 1, Chris 1, Toby 1)

Game 2
Lost 12 - 9 (Scorers - Sam 3, Max 1, Chris 2, Thomas  2, Toby 1)

Game
Lost 9 - 8 (Scorers Ollie 1, Max 1, Toby 2, Chris 1, Sam 1, Callum 2)

Today's scorers
Eddie 4, Sam 4, Toby 4, Chris 4, Callum 2, Max 2, Thomas 2, Alex 1, Ollie 1, Rhys 1

C&N v Wilmslow (AWAY)

Although the weather was horrendous in Nantwich cross fingers led to  dry but windy weather once we got to Wilmslow.
It was to be a tri way with Anselmians there as well. We managed to get our first match in before the Remembrance stoppage.
The boys were a bit slow to start, but soon got stuck in. We moved up quickly in defence, and there was good support play in attack.

Wilmslow match 1
Won 13-8 (scorers - Toby 1, Sam 3, Rhys 1, Ben 1, Eddie 7)

Wilmslow match 2
Won 9-8 scorers – (Toby 2, Rhys 2, Ben 1, Chris 1, Eddie 3)

Anselmians
Won 8-5 scorers – (Toby 1, Rhys 1, Chris 2, Eddie 4)

Scorers today -
Eddie – 14, Toby – 4, Rhys – 4, Chris – 3, Sam – 3, Ben 2

All coaches pleased with performance this week. Going forward we need to remember to keep a good defence in place and not all get sucked over to one part of the pitch

No player of the week this week as the cup was not brought back!

U8s v Anselmians 19th October 2008

It made a pleasant change to play Anselmians at home, as it always seems to be  very cold when we play against them away. The U8s were missing some of the senior players this week, but it gave an opportunity for all to shine.

Anselmians brought just 7 so 2 long games were played. We drew first game 6-6 (scorers were - Olly 2, Sam 2, Max 1 and Archie 1)  and won second game 9-7 (scorers were - Olly 2, Sam 3, Max 3 and Chris 1) We saw some better support play by many, and we seemed confident on attack. A couple of small mistakes saw us drop some points across the
2 games - forward pass, try at wrong place etc. This simple mistakes need to be ironed out, mainly by a few seconds thought when under pressure.

Player of the Week went to Alex Jump for all round effort, which included some great tackling.

Manchester Festival 12th October 2008

U8's attended the Manchester Festival in fabulous conditions - soft ground, sunny warm day. We only new Maccesfield in our Pool, the other teams were new to us.

photo

We won first game v Fleetwood 4-2 (scorers were Eddie Cooper 2, Ben Grainger 1 and Rhys Spencer-Price 1)

We won the second game v Warrington 6-4 (scorers were Eddie Cooper 3, Oliver Anderson 1, Sam Anderson 1 and Chris Richards 1

We won third game v Macclesfield 4-1 (scorers were Eddie Cooper 1, Oliver Anderson 1, Sam Anderson 1 and Rhys Spencer-Price 1.

We were denied a try in the first match because the referee stopped the game as Thomas ran for the line, rather than stopping at the next breakdown, which would later cause us probems. In all the games the boys put on some great attack moves, but it was their defense that shone. Rarely was a tackle missed, and players made great efforts to continually get back into position. We came top of our group.

We drew v Lymm in the Semi Final 6-6 (scorers were Eddie Cooper 2, Oliver Anderson 2, Sam Anderson 1 and Rhys Spencer-Price 1). It was a hard game, including some excessive rough play by Lymm, whose last try was considered by some to be a forward pass. This and our missed try in game 1 caused us to miss out on the final based on points scored overall compared with Lymm.

Overall the lads played great and all coaches were very please and proud with the performance. Remember we did not lose one game!

Northwich V Crewe & Nantwich 5th October 2008

(1 win, 1 draw)

First game of the season, and the players put in a overall good performance. Now the players are of one age group, it is good to see the game play coming together, with strong defense and some good attack play.
We may good use of the pitch on attack, concentrating on moving forward on 1st phase, then moving out to the sides as play progressed.
In defense we moved round the pitch reasonably well, but we did miss some tackles we would normally get. We need to keep up the pressure on tackling to make use of the 7 tags and ball over rule at U8s level.
Overall all coaches were happy with the standard of play for game 1 of the season.
